Would be a nice feature like 2.x where we can see how many items are in the shopping cart.

I like this idea
A must Have feature, indeed you have remember me about this, i have already made a plugin to get cart items, i will see if we can release it soon, as it need some tweak to be compatible with a standard blesta installation, the mine has some relation with some custom plugins .
a global checkout for all order forms along with a dynamic "items in cart" icon would be great.
